I'm trying to create an orc variant race. I've notice that the old way of just creating a race and just clicking the "variant" box in the basic information seems to have been done away with. Now you you choose to create a variant and then choose a race, which is fine, except that once you choose a race then you are required to use an existing variant for that race as a template to create your new variant. This a problem, because many races have no variants so there is no template to choose. If you try to continue without choosing one then it just sends you right back to that screen. Underneath "Select an existing Variant as a template:" it is says "This field is required.". Having templates as an option is awesome, but it should never be mandatory. As far as I can tell it is currently impossible to create variants for any race that doesn't already have an official variant. I can't imagine this is intentional.
I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem on my end. If this is something I'm doing wrong please help me understand. Otherwise I guess just get around to checking things out whenever able. Yes I do realize that I can just create a whole new race and just call it "orc variant" and I have done that for the time being. Still, it would be nice to just be able to make a variant by selecting "create variant".
Thank you in advance to everyone who tries to help.
When you go to create a variant of a race, you should see the following:
Clicking the Create button at the bottom is only for when selecting an existing Variant as a template. If you're creating a Variant of a race from scratch, you should be clicking the Create from Scratch button in the middle, just underneath the drop-down where you selected which race to create a Variant for. I've only just tested this again myself, and it's working fine here!
If you're clicking the Create from Scratch button and still getting that strange behavior, check that you have no extensions that may be interfering (Beyond20, AboveVTT, ad-blockers, VPNs, etc.)... Often these can create unintended side effects with normal D&D Beyond website function.
I took your advice and it seems to have been related to my ad blocker in some way. I'm not really sure how or why. Turned it off and restarted the computer... problem solved. I guess the problem was on my end after all. I should have known. lol I'm not very tech savvy (in case that's not obvious at this point), so I likely would not have guessed that to be the problem. Thank you for taking the time to help me out even though it was just a small stupid thing that most people would solve easily.
