Hi, I am pretty new to D&D and DnD Beyond. I am currently making few characters trying to figure out how all of this works. I recently made a dragonborn paladin and I am missing some check boss or something like that for Divine Smite. I know that there is a description of the spell in Class Features, but I would also expect it in Spells table or in Limited use. Am I blind or completely out of mind and Divine Smite does not belong to neither of those?
Thanks in advance for any answer, Filip

I know that Divine Smite uses a spell slot, but I can't find it anywhere in my Known Spells or Prepared Spells. Just to be clear my paladin is level 5 Oathbreaker.
Yes, Divine Smite is not supposed to appear in the Spell section. It is a feature, you have the description in the Feature box. When you use it just check the corresponding spell slot.
Can I hijack this thread for a second? It's the closest one I could find for my question...
So Divine Smite uses a spell slot, got it. Oh, but the description says "if they hit." So if they miss, do they need to check off the spell slot like a missed spell? Or does the player hit AND THEN declare, "I shall make this hit connect as a Divine Smite! Begone Foul Creature!" So it's only expended with the hit. (And if you're really brave... how would that compare to the Battlemaster's Maneuvers?)
So if the attack is a miss is the spell slot lost? I think you're leaning towards a "no, it's not lost because there wasn't a hit..." I think that's how I will adjudicate it from now on. Besides, my Paladin player will be a lot less grumpy that way. ;-)
It's used only if it was a hit. Basically, you know if you hit and then you choose whether you wish to smite or not. If you miss, you don't waste the spell slot.
this is exactly why the holy brute (paladin barb) crossclass is so powerful. Wreckless swings, double your chance for a crit. then smite on landing a crit to double the damage dice. if you miss, you dont lose any slots.
The spell slot is not used until after you hit.

Hi Filip,
The Divine Smite feature of the Paladin uses spell slots, so you can track it in the spellcasting section.
Thank you for fast answer.

Divine Smite says "...when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack...", so, only if you hit, you can use the feature.

That is correct, if the attack hits, burn a spell slot and do additional damage. Nothing happens on a miss since you can't trigger smite on a miss.
