Hello. I apologise in advance if this is in the wrong sub-forum! I've recently created a level 1 Aquatic Half-Elf. In the builder under 'Race', it has "Swimming Speed: A half-elf of aquatic heritage can forgo Skill Versatility and instead choose a swimming speed of 30 feet." Unfortunately it seems that this option is marked as the default. I don't want to "forgo" Skill Versatility, but the character builder isn't giving me any way to correct or change this. Is anyone able to assist?
Just use the base Half-Elf. The aquatic half-elf option in the builder is there for technical reasons for when a player wants to use that optional feature.
If you still would prefer your sheet to state "Aquatic Half-Elf," you should be able to make a copy of the basic Half-Elf in the homebrew tools, renaming it appropriately. As its licensed material, you cannot publish this homebrew publically, but it will still be usable in your games by you and other players in your campaigns.
Thank you for the tip! I am a little confused about why the aquatic half-elf sub-race doesn't work properly as it is, though; is this something that's likely to be fixed?
It does work properly and as intended. In 5e, there is no race titled “Aquatic Half-Elf.” There is mention of half-elves “of aquatic heritage” for that specific optional rule alongside other elven heritages, but otherwise all half-elves are just half-elves. The existence of “High Half-Elf,” “Wood Half-Elf,” “Aquatic Half-Elf,” etc. as character options on DND Beyond exist specifically as DND Beyond’s method of applying that optional rule in the character builder.
