Just do the upgrade right before your subscription runs out. So, if your subscription runs through Dec 10, set up your new subscription on Dec 9. If it's set to end April 12, and you want to upgrade now, put in a ticket to get a partial refund/exchange of cost on your remaining time and losing characters shouldn't be an issue.
I just don't see an "Upgrade Subsriction" button on the marketplace. I'm not 100% concerned about credits or refunds but I don't want to lose the characters I've made as Some of them are going to be used for my upcoming campaign.
There is no way to upgrade, you just start a new subscription at the higher tier. So if your current subscription isn't ending any time soon, you're paying for both. In which case you're best off opening a ticket, but it sounds like yours is ending soon, so you're fine.
