So I was making a blood hunter character and noticed something about the starting equivalent. If you select “A martial weapon” an option will populate called firearm. Out of curiosity I added it to see what it was and found that it had a 2d6+dex mod necrotic. Is this an error or is this a legal game item
Not limited to blood hunter. It is showing up in ever class's starting equipment as a martial weapon option (or at least fighter, didn't feel like testing all).
Oh that is good information. So I based off that I would guess it’s associated with any class that has a choice of martial weapons in starting equipment

Yeah, it is possibly an unfinished or placeholder item for a future update that didn't get fully hidden. My guess is either more spelljammer stuff (the antimatter rifle is a firearm that deals necrotic, so this could be a more balanced version) or they are testing some homebrew tools.
I hope it is the latter, but I doubt we will get an answer any time soon.
