According to the 2024phb, sorcerers have simple weapon proficiency. No longer restricted to simple weapon proficiency (sorcerer).
So if I pick a great club, why do I have penalty on a sorcerer?
"In the 2024 Player’s Handbook, every class can use every Simple weapon. In its previous iteration, some classes (like Sorcerer, Warlocks, and Wizards) could only use certain Simple weapons (Daggers, Darts, Slings, Quarterstaffs, Light Crossbows). Now, your Wizard can pick up a Greatclub and try to bonk your opponents if you so choose.

Two possibilities occur to me right away:
1. You are using the 2014 version of the Sorcerer class that doesn't have that proficiency.
2. Your Sorcerer's Strength score is low enough that its negative modifier outweighs the proficiency bonus.
If it doesn't sound like either of those things is true, can you post the link to your character so I can take a look at it? Make sure you set the Character Privacy option on the Home tab to Public first.
