I'm bestowing a dark gift on the ranger in my party and I want it to function as a cantrip but having one hell of a time crafting this. I've tried building it as a spell, wonderous item, and weapon.
The player in question attuned to a sacrificial dagger that whispers in his mind and gives him temp hit points with each life taken. I'm using a Dark Gifts kind of path he's headed down from my time running the Ravenloft red box.
He just took his 2nd life with the dagger and at the 3rd life taken I want to give him the following:
"Flit's Fiendish Finger: You can use an action to point this long, black fingernail to create a putrid, purple stream of mist. Make a ranged spell attack against a target within reach (120ft). On a hit, the target takes 2d8 Necrotic damage, and it can’t regain Hit Points until the end of your next turn.
The price? You secretly take 2d4 necrotic damage with each use of this grotesque but totally *****in' long, black fingernail."
So yeah, it's just the "old" Chill Touch with a bit of fiendish curse flavor. The PC, Flit is a 7th level ranger (hence the 2d8). At first I thought it wasn't working because rangers only have spells. I know they start with druid cantrips but rangers don't have cantrip slots. But I've had no luck building this on a ring, rod, wand, dart, blowgun, and javelin frames.
HELP! Any and all thoughts and help here is appreciated.
The dagger will just be a homebrew weapon but only have the text for adding temp HP. The player will need to adjust their temp HP manually.
Make the features as Feats (a feat can add an action for the ranged spell attack). Each time he gets a new feature from the weapon, have him add the feat to his character (features > manage feats).

The dagger is created and completed. USING the dagger to take lives is gradually changing and adding things to the PC, whether he keeps or has the dagger itself. I need this and future steps achieved to be something I can homebrew add to the Ranger, not the dagger.
I hope this is the place for this...

I’d create the spell, then add it to the dagger.

Got it! Built this gift as a feat and it worked great!
