I am working on building a halfling bard. I want him learn the Shield spell, so I purchased the digital 2024 PHB in the Marketplace. I cannot find the PHB as a source. I can see it in my library and everything looks as if it has synced. I'm not sure how to add the book so I can add the spell. I have deleted my cookies, thinking that may be the issue, but it didn't seem to change anything. I'm new to D&D (and D&D Beyond), so please excuse my ignorance. Any help would be appreciated.
This is probably because Shield is not a spell that's generally available to Bards.
Each spell has a specific set of classes listed for it, and it can generally only be taken by those classes. Shield is available to Sorcerers and Wizards.
Thank you for that information. His background was a sage so I didn’t know if that would make a difference or not. I will look at other spells then.
The Sage background does not give you access to Wizard spells in general, but if you're using the 5.5e version it does give you the Magic Initiate feat, which grants you one 1st-level Wizard spell of your choice. You can pick Shield for that if you want, but you do that as part of the feat itself on the Background tab, not on the main spells list on the Class tab.

Sage does make a difference, but you have to select Shield through the Magic Initiate feat
