Sorcerer multiclass and metamagic

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is a bug or just misunderstanding of the rules, but lets go.

I have a player who is a sorcerer lv 8 and he just added multiclass to Ranger lv1.

Once he did upgrade his character to level 9, his sheet started showing spell slot lv 5 (which in my understanding should not be there). I thought it could be related to Metamagic upcasting, but then in the players book it states that the sorcerer needs at least sorcerer lv 9 to use it, as tablebelow:
