I am an old player but new to D&D Beyond. I am creating an Epic Saga Campaign in D&D Beyond. I have noticed limited availability of tokens in the VTT Maps and so I have been trying to get more. As I browse my available tokens looking for something that fits the scene I want, I see greyed out tokens. I was looking for a bard today and found one such greyed out token called "Bard * Legacy". A quick search shows me that token is part of "Volo's Guide to Monsters". However, I cannot purchase that book. I cannot even look at the content of that book. How can I get MORE tokens? Why is this interface so difficult to work with?
When I say that I am an old player, I began my Dungeons and Dragons journey in High School in 1982. I still love the game. Please help me understand how to get all the content I want to build my Alpha stage of Dragons of Destiny.
Getting more tokens is unrelated to legacy content.
To get more tokens, you need to either
Homebrew monsters and upload art to that monsters stat block. The uploaded art will be converted to a token or
Purchase books that contain monsters (and monster art). The best sources for this would be Mordenkainen Presets; Monsters of the Multiverse and the Monster Manual (2024). Both these books not only feature a large number of monsters (second and first most monsters per book respectively) but also the highest ration of art to monsters.
To clarify the legacy tag, this qualifies sources that are no longer considered the latest version of something, but haven't simply been errata'd. In the case of Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, those books are no longer available for sale (as are a few others such as the original Lost Mine of Phandelver). 99.9% of the monsters found in those two books can be also found, with more art and improved stats, in Mordenkainen Presets; Monsters of the Multiverse
Volo's Guide to Monsters is no longer available for purchase, but the tokens and stat blocks from it remain available in the various online tools for those who purchased it while it was available. Updated versions of most of what was in it (including that specific Bard stat block) can be found in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.
You can get more tokens by purchasing more of the books that include monster stat blocks. The books that have the most are the core Monster Manual and the aforementioned Monsters of the Multiverse. Setting-specific books like Eberron: Rising from the Last War, Spelljammer: Adventures in Space, and Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse will have some more that are appropriate to their individual settings. If there's something specific you're looking for, the token browser in the VTT will tell you what you need to purchase to get it, as you've already found.
