It would be awesome if WotC would allow a single purchase to be used across different VTT providers such as Roll20, Maps, etc., similar to Movies Anywhere. This would make it easier to decide to make purchases and not feel locked to one provider. For example, I currently have more products purchased via Roll20, and I am reluctant to purchase a second time in Maps even though I like the improvements made in Maps.
I'd imagine that the suits don't want you to be unlocked to providers, and the physical books already permit no lock in.
I could see them offering some level of credit to transfer libraries to D&D Beyond but I imagine that would cause some bad blood with their existing partners like Roll20.
In order to do that, somebody (which means wotc) would have to be paying the other providers so that their costs in providing the book and related services are covered. And, unlike watching a movie, which is something most people don't do very often, people playing D&D do it all the time, so the costs over time are likely higher.
