I am noticing that links in the Online DMG for 5.5 are referencing the 2014 rules example Staff of Withering in 5.5 may be attuned by anyone but the one actually linked in the 5.5 DMG is sending me to one that is only attunable by Cleric, Druid, or Warlock and gives the reference page of 205. Clearly, this refers to the old book.
It's not so much that it's linking to the old version as that they didn't create a new version of it at all. They mostly didn't do this for items that didn't have any meaningful changes between the 5e and 5.5e versions. It looks like they missed the change in attunement restrictions and mistakenly thought they didn't need to create a new version for this one.
The correct page reference for 5.5e is page 312, if that's of use to anyone.
The problem is that what they consider not meaningful can lead to some interesting issues for players wanting to make a wishlist, something the DMG does suggest doing. I am dealing with a newer DM who has some very good questions, such as, "Why would you suggest X class use Y item when they cannot attune, are not proficient with, etc..." When I answer something like, "Oh well, you see, when they made their site, they didn't bother to actually do the work required to show the changes when they made changes." It makes them not want to rely on the core books of the game; consequently, we are now discussing moving games entirely, because the main site does not reference the updated versions. The fact is it is meaningful if a class could not use an item before but now can. In fact, that is arguably more meaningful to the people using the items than changes to wording.
