I'm having trouble getting Shillelagh to work correctly. I have a +2 quarterstaff, level 10 Cleric/Druid with 18 Wisdom (+4) and +4 proficiency bonus. This should give him +10 to hit bonus (+2 magic, +4 wisdom, +4 prof) and 1d8+6 damage (+2 magic, +4 wisdom).
The spell (which shows as a bonus action) has correct +10 to hit, but only 1d8+4 for damage (doesn't include the +2 for the quarterstaff).
I can create a custom action but there is no way to add a to-hit bonus; it only shows +8 to-hit (+4 Wisdom, +4 prof) but the correct damage 1d8+6 (+2 magic, +4 Wisdom). There is no way, that I can see, to add a to-hit bonus to a custom action.
So either the Shillelagh spell needs to correctly incorporate the weapon bonus to both to-hit and damage, -OR- allow custom weapon action to add a to-hit bonus as well as damage.
You can edit the Staff of the Woodland attack in order to replicate that. You can override both to-hit and damage bonuses.
That also presents a partial solution. While I can update the to-hit and damage, I cannot update the damage dice. Admittedly, a quarterstaff has the variable property which will show a 1d8 value, that is only by coincidence. If this was a Club +2, it still wouldn't solve the problem as that is a 1d4 damage dice.
I think in the end, the Custom Action (Weapon) should also have a way to add a to-hit bonus as well as damage.
I have found another issue with how Shillelagh works.
Through feats and whatnot, my character has both Shillelagh and Booming Blade. Under "Attacks", my quarterstaff shows in the Notes section that the staff is Versatile and the extra damage for Booming blade. However, it shows that the attack is only +1 to-hit and 1d6 -1 (or 1d8 -1 for two-handed) because the character only has a Strength of 8.
In Bonus Attacks, it correctly shows that the attack is +5 to-hit and 1d6 + 3 (or 1d8 +3 for two-handed) since it's using my Wisdom instead of Strength. But it does not show the Booming Blade damage. I think this is because Shillelagh is a melee attack, but not a melee weapon. At this point, I have the work around of looking at the spell for the correct to-hit and base damage and the weapon for the extra damage.
But the problem gets worse with a level of Fighter to get the "Dueling" fighting style (gives +2 to damage if only fighting with one hand).
The Attack stats and the Bonus Attack stats become completely out of whack as the Shillelagh doesn't count as a weapon. So it's only showing the base 1d8 + 4 damage, but not the extra +2. The weapon shows the +2 but also factors in the -1 because it's still basing it off strength.
I think a reasonable approach would be to allow spells to have a checkbox to signify it as a "weapon" and not just as an "attack". This would also help the Shadow Blade spell as it forms a weapon also.
There also seems to be a problem with properly calculating damage for Shillelagh in the character sheet.
RAW for Shillelagh state " For the duration, you can use your spellcasting ability instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of melee attacks using that weapon, and the weapon's damage die becomes a d8"
My druid has a spellcasting ability of 8, which is properly applied to the attack roll in the character sheet, however the damage is only calculated as d8+5. It should be d8+8.
Am I reading the rules wrong? My druid does have a WIS modifier of +5 (20 WIS). Is that an error in the spell description, or in how the damage is calculated by DNDBeyond?
Damage rolls don't include the Proficiency Bonus, only the ability score modifier (+5 for your 20 Wisdom). The +8 you see is your Spell Attack modifier, which does include your proficiency bonus.
Ok i think that explains it. I was assuming the bonus should be the same but i didn't take into consideration that the attack roll uses my proficiency bonus in addition to my spellcasting ability, while the damage roll doesn't. Thanks for clearing that up.
