If you have spell slots, can you use them to cast the 1st-level spell you learn with the Magic Initiate feat? Yes, but only if the class you pick for the feat is one of your classes.
The Magic Initiate feat is not working that way. It allows the character to cast the 1st level spell once, but that is it. The spell should be added as a spell that uses spell slots as well, including being able to use higher level spell slots. I cannot find anyway to add a spell to the character's spells known via a feat or magic item. Please let me know if I am missing something that I can use as a workaround.
I agree with the wording. This should work like "Speaks with Animals" does in the Gnome Lineage (which is working and gives you a x2 use + cast option). We should get a x1 use + cast option with whatever spell is selected. (Magic Initiate from the "Guide" Origin: background). Currently Magic Initiate only gives you the x1 use.
