I have been trying to make a homebrew feat that gives a player a +1 to their ranged attacks (both weapon and spell attacks). It appears to work and give his character a +1 to longbow attacks (melee weapons) but none of his spell attacks that are ranged get a bonus. Additionally, I tried to use just the ranged spell attack modifier (instead of the more inclusive modifier) and it did not seem to work either. The spells in question are Chill Touch and Chromatic orb for a wizard character. Nothing changed either when I selected Intelligence as the ability score either, just to try and nudge the setting in the right direction.
I dont think there are any official features that add a bonus to (just) ranged spell attacks, so it may not be possible (since the homebrew tools are the same tools the devs use for official features).
That's strange because it's totally an option in the drop down. When creating the modifier, I select "bonus" because it's just a bonus +1 and in the drop down are separate options for ranged attack, ranged weapon attack, and ranged spell attack. Is it common to have selectable options that don't perform any function?
Honestly, their are some modifiers that dont have a function. Either they were scrapped part way or had their functionality moved to a different modifier or tool. Stuff like this is why they want to rebuild the homebrew tools.
I’ve been experiencing similar problems. I was trying to create a feat that allowed a +1 to ranged spell attacks. As you say, the homebrew menu seems to allow the function, but then it doesn’t translate once the feat is applied in the character sheet. I tried creating an item to circumvent the error and found the same problem.

Yeah, this seems to be just a bug.
