The text mistakenly suggests a character with a constitution score of 18 would level from 17 to 18. The first 18 in the paragraph should probably be a 17.
"When your Constitution modifier increases by 1, your hit point maximum increases by 1 for each level you have attained. For example, if your 7th-level fighter has a Constitution score of 18, when he reaches 8th level, he increases his Constitution score from 17 to 18, thus increasing his Constitution modifier from +3 to +4. His hit point maximum then increases by 8."

Along those same lines, this assumes that the Hit Die has already been "rolled", but doesn't really specify. I don't know if that's technically a typo, but it is a bit confusing. I suppose the real question here is, does the Hit Die roll, or the ability score (and associated modifier) increase happen first.
To use the given example: Your 7th-level fighter has a Constitution score of 17 and a hit point maximum of 67. When he reaches 8th level, he increases his Constitution score from 17 to 18, thus increasing his Constitution modifier from +3 to +4. Does he:
roll a d10(6)+3 for and increase of 9, then increase by 8 for the Constitution modifier increase (for a total of 84), or
increase his hit point maximum by 8 (for the Constitution modifier), then roll a d10(6)+4 for an increase of 10 (for a total of 85)?
This is only a difference of 1 HP one way or the other, but 1 HP can often be the difference between standing and being dropped.
