I had recently gotten the monster manual so I could do some encounters, thinking there'd be a code to get the book online, I paid almost $50 for the hard copy, I'd rather not pay more just for the online version as well
Wizards of Coast and D&D Beyond are different companies. The quick answer is "yes." (Much like you have to do that for any other digital format outside D&D Beyond.) The digital format is COMPLETELY different than the hardback book you purchased. For starters: Search & Linking.
I'm not associated with DDB, but that's how it works.
