I had my first in-person D&D game in over a year last night, and I wanted to use my D&D Beyond character sheet for the game. I knew that we would be playing in a location without internet access, so I planned on using the app's offline functionality. However when testing before the game, I found that the character sheets on the app can become inaccessible if attempting to access while the device is offline.
Tested on iOS 15.0 on an iPhone 11, and iPadOS 15.0 on a 2018 iPad Pro. Both showed the same behaviour. Used the current D&D Beyond app from the App Store on both devices.
Expected behaviour: after loading the app and loading a character sheet while the device is connected to the internet, the character sheet should remain cached and accessible while the device is offline, with any changes made to the character sheet while offline synced back to the server when the device reconnects to the internet.
Steps to reproduce:
Install the app and sign in to D&D Beyond account.
While device is connected to the internet, load the desired character sheet by selecting it from the Characters menu.
Disconnect the device from the internet.
The next time the character sheet is selected, there is a chance that the character sheet does not load – the loading screen (animated red icon of two swords) remains on screen indefinitely.
Reconnect the device to the internet.
If the character sheet failed to load in step 4, then the issue remains seemingly indefinitely even after the device is connected to the internet again, and the character sheet remains inaccessible through the app even when online.
Notes:
Quitting the app and relaunching does not resolve the issue.
I have found that deleting and re-installing the app allows access to the character sheet again, but if the device is taken offline again then the issue will usually reoccur.
The issue does not seem to consistently affect all character sheets – some characters will load without issue while offline.
The issue may be consistently affecting individual character sheets – I was able to reproduce it consistently with the particular character sheet I was trying to use for my game. I did not thoroughly test this with other character sheets however.
