unpopular opinion: dnd beyond, roll20, world anvil, etc etc are all trash unless you are willing to spend an unreasonable amount of money on them and the "free to use" features are so limited it's insulting, especially right now when the outside world is a raging dumpster fire and people are looking for some extra escapism but do not have extra funds to spend on new hobbies and I think dnd beyond specifically out off all of the above listed should be super ashamed that they aren't doing more to provide for a community in need without nickel and dining them for everything. especially when ya know folk already spent thirty bucks on the phb and now I gotta spend another 30 just to use the hermit background on the character builder? gtfo!
I do not like it either when beggars are nickeling and diming businesses and then complain about a free buffet not being enough. That is extremely rude and even more insulting. I could just as easily flip the argument back against you and say that whatever job you are doing is not worth the wages your boss is paying you, and that your employer should find someone else to do your job for less.
Just as you are not made of money, the developers of this site are not made of money either, and they got bills to pay and mouths to feed just like you. Personally, I would never dump $30 bucks on a new hobby without minimal research, and I strongly discourage new D&D players from spending any money on D&D until they are sure they actually like the game and want to play a second or third campaign. Spending $30 bucks every time you get a new hobby is a horrible idea, and if you are just spending money willy nilly everytime something fancies you, it is not other people's fault that you are having money troubles. With just a minimal amount of Google searches, you can get a crapload of free content for D&D already.
I agree that Beyond does not have everything right and they still need to make a lot of improvements, but you are not getting much additional features by paying. All you get for Hero Tier Subscription is unlimited character slots and access to Homebrew. Master Tier gets you that and content sharing. These features are not really relevant for new D&D players. There is honestly no need to buy official source books and adventure books either since a lot of GMs make up their own stuff, and Googling will already give you more than enough Homebrew than you can ask for. What you are asking for is to nickel and dime Beyond to get you a small amount of remaining features for free and get access to intellectual property without paying for it.
I have the physical copy of a book and I want to use the backgrounds that I have on there for my Character. How can I do this?
Use the Homebrew tools to create them.
If you're lazy, you can buy them.
