The idea is pretty simple: a number of spells require material components. Even casters that use a focus need the material components that have a gold cost associated, such as the diamond worth at least 50 GP used to cast Chromatic Orb or the pearl worth at least 100 GP to cast Identify. Additionally, some campaigns have their wizards track the material components needed to learn spells, in increments of 25 and 50 GP.
The list of these items isn't all that long, and since they're in the source material it would be awesome if they were available as stock items on D&DBeyond. I don't have an opinion on whether the fine inks and test components are tracked in increments of 25 (and you often spend them in multiples of 2) or in 50 (and you occasionally spend them in multiples of 0.5).
