Hi there... looks like Toll the Dead is broken in D&D Beyond. When you cast the cantrip, it only allows for the d8 damage option, but does not have an option for the d12 damage if the target is wounded. Obviously, it's displayed correctly in the spell description, but does not give the option to roll d12's for damage. Seems like it could be coded like certain versatile weapons are done, allowing for the user to choose which dice are applicable for the situation at hand and the status of the target.
While we're at it, Chaos Bolt isn't displayed correctly either... in the spell description, the spell does 2d8 +1d6 for damage, but in the attack roll from a character's sheet, it only allows the 2d8 to be rolled, and does not include the additional d6. Can this be corrected? I'm sure this was brought up years ago, but apparently it's never been fixed.
The digital dice rolling doesn't have full support for multiple damage dice. This is something that the team is aware of and will be expanded upon in the future.
In the meantime, you can use custom actions for easily rolling the extra/alternative damage.

And people still pour their money into this. Let's also not forget that leveling up from 1 to 2 is also still broken, years later. I like that it's easy to use but no one can deny DDB's main feature is broken as heck and they will never actually fix what is seriously a minor glitch and then we can just pray that new books get adapted sooner than later. Case in point, you're better off just printing up character sheets and using ******* for reference for anything beyond PHB, DMG and MM. Soon as James left it's been absolute crap and acquisition hasn't helped it at all, despite my highest hopes.

In what way? I've levelled from 1 to 2 hundreds of times (literally, hundreds) for every class and, where applicable, subclass and not once encountered an issue. Can you elaborate?

James who? James Haeck the writer that had no bearing on development or anything on this site except some articles he wrote, freelance?
The issues began before anyone left. They were worsened when Fandom took over and worsened when Adam and other site staff left. The Wizards acquisition did not worsen anything - nor improve anything. It basically did nothing. The development was near-dead already.
We have since had very tiny minor improvements to feats since then. And that's about it.
I agree with your overall sentiment but some of your points make no sense.

Actually it's been partially fixed and it works prompting the right question (Is the target missing any of its hit points ?), but onlyif you haven't customized anything (i.e. spell name).
If you happened to have modified the name of the spell, then no question...

This is not an official feature and likely the function of some unsupported, third party extension

I don't understand how this is complicated, if they already have multiple dice options for versatile weapons

This doesn't happen for me. (Spells aren't edited)

See Post 11 from moderator Davyd for why it doesn't.

Found this thread in mid-August 2024 because it is still not working. Toll the Dead is maybe the best cantrip once Potent Cantrip is obtained--soon to be at level 2 instead of level 6! Surely this is going to be frustrating for many people...
Update:
It is possible to fix this yourself if you are so motivated:
Go to "My Homebrew Creations" and create a spell that is based on a copy of Toll the Dead.
Rename the new spell "Toll the Dead (damaged enemy)" or whatever.
Delete the one existing entry under "modifiers" for d8 damage and add a new one for d12 damage.
Delete the three existing entries under "at higher levels" and add the d12 versions.
Save and go to character sheet.
Under "Manage Feats", give your character the feat "Magic Initiate (Wizard)".
Select the homebrew spell created and leave the other two choices blank.
I have confirmed that the above works, and scales to 2d12 at wizard level 6. This seems like it would be a simple enough change to show d8 and d12 damage in the original cantrip, but for now hopefully this works for folks.

Better to make a new feat to grant the cantrip. Your method means you can never pick Magic Initiate (Wizard) legitimately for that character.

Aaand ... 17 months later and still not fixed.

Three years later, I still got to this thread because it's still broken.
Mhm. I wonder if they still consider the dice roller to be iN bEtA.
Any updates? Is the future 2030? 2040? 2500?

Easier to edit the damage modifier and change to d12. That way you don't need to edit anything else as the 'at higher levels' will auto update.
