This feature has been requested in the past, but I would like the ability to manually track and spend hit dice on the character sheet without needing to take a short rest. There are certain official features, like Dwarven Fortitude in Xanathar's, that allow you to spend hit dice outside of a short rest that are a bit of a nuisance to track right now.
PLEASE devs, look into this. I have house-rules that involve spending hit dice. The fact there's even OFFICIAL content that does it too means this should really be a priority.
Want to bump this again, as its especially important now we have spells like Arcane Vigor or the uses that Healing kits provide in using or expending hit dice.
This would be REALLY useful. One of my party members has the Healer feat (which is a basic feat in the PHB, no additional source books required, just a base game ability), but I'm playing a Warlock. I would love to have a way to expend hit dice when he uses the feat without taking a Short Rest, which would reset my spell slots.

Coming in the new Game Engine rebuild.
the news about the big backend rebuild is, to me, the most exciting. i'm curious to know what features were difficult or even an impossibility to implement before that we can expect to work seamlessly through the new character builder. can you name some specific pain points you want to eliminate?
WOTC_BrianPerry:
I asked the team to give me a list of their top pain points and got quite the list back. Here are just a few things that are near impossible to implement today that will be possible with the rebuild.
Monsters or Stat Blocks that scale with your character level (for example, the Draconic Spirit from the Summon Dragon spell, or sidekicks from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything)
Using Hit Dice as an expendable resource (like with the Durable feat)
Giving Magic Items actions. For example, today, you can't roll the additional Fire damage for a Flame Tongue weapon
Having conditions work in the character sheet
A lot of UX-based things, such as being able to expend a spell slot to recharge a feature
The Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul's level 1 feature from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Charms/Blessings
Content that meaningfully deviate from the D&D 5E core rules in a non-trivial way
Minimum dice values (like with a Rogue's Reliable Talent feature)
Wider Eldritch Invocation support (like being able to target spells that aren't Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast*)*
The list goes on. I’m stopping here to keep it from becoming a novel.

Agreed, this would be very useful.
Please add this feature. How am I supposed to track hit die when I spend them with Lifedrinker?
Yup
Yep! It’s annoying we still don’t have this

Bumping again. Devs please.
I know it won't be tied into the actual hit die counter but you could homebrew a hit die tracker feat.
Edit: This would require the feat changing per level but at least it's something.
2nd Edit: You can just create a limited use per level and only have 1 feat and this will work.
Yes, as a Battle Medic, it's difficult to use without managing Hit Dice outside of a Short Rest
This is the feat I threw together after reading this topic. It should do what you want. You could also build this into a species.

Any news on this topic? Basic functionality still missing.
It's in the pipeline

Always study & sharpen philosophical razors. They save a lot of trouble.
