Automation tools aren't the only way that verification can be triggered, it's just an example. Suspicious internet traffic, which can be caused by your browser, extensions, or even your isp

The paranoid modron says "We believe you are using automation...", which is not stated as an example.
I get that you need to protect the site from DDOS attacks, but when a verification is being triggered often enough to make the site useless, is uptime relevant? I'm not just getting the occasional 5-second verification prompt. I'm holding down the button until it fills, the site shits there with the blinking dots for 30-60 seconds more, eventually fails, says 'try again', reprompts but with a longer hold time, fails, reprompts, takes even longer, fails... Eventually, I wipe my cookies & cache so I can use the site for another few minutes before it repeats the paranoid garbage again. By now I'm skipping to the cache-wipe step because it's become inevitable. I guess I'll need to start keeping a "not worth subscribing to again" tally.

I am also having this problem too. The only browser extensions I have are those provided by norton. The troubleshooting guide wants me to clear my cache, delete my cookies and then turn my internet off/on. When the solution requires the subscriber to jump through a series of hoops like a circus animal eventually they are going to stop subscribing.
