Almost a year ago I got into a D&D game to spend some online game time with my daughters who are now both out of college and working far enough away that I don't see much of them. The DM got us all on D&DB and we had a few great sessions, but the DMs situation changed and we didn't play for months. Last week I agreed to try my hand at DM (this is my first D&D game since the mid 1980s, so there are a few new things to learn). I upped my subscription tier and bought the Phandelver book to continue our adventure. This got me to maps and encounters which took several hours to figure out, not that it's hard, but I tend to dig into every corner of a system when I'm learning. My questions are as follows. Please let me know if I'm missing a way to accomplish something. If these items are not currently possible please take this as a request to add the feature.
1. I set up maps for each zone and populated monsters based on each encounter I set up. I would like to scale and position these maps for the players so they are focused on the encounter, but the scale and position of the map does not save. Is there a way to scale/position the map and save it like that so when I pop it up for players to see it will be exactly what I want?
2. I made a map of the Sleeping Giant and placed all of the NPCs the players can speak to on the map. I had to make them as Monsters. Is there a way to add another category in the token browser for NPCs? I tend to like the non combat encounters in role playing and it would be great if all of the NPCs in a campaign preloaded as tokens like monsters do.
3. I am using the Map feature to add images to the campaign as well. For instance I created custom maps by copying the pictures of NPCs from the campaign book as custom maps. This allows me to pop up a picture of the NPC when players are talking to them. I also made maps of other photos from the source books to add a constant visual aid to my campaign. the problem with adding this many maps is that they are not organized very well in the menu. - I don't seem to be able to adjust the order of the maps in the pull down map selection menu - It would be great if there were a folder structure I could create to organize my maps
4. I am planning to implement sidekicks into the campaign. I think this feature will add a lot to the role playing. The first one I intend to put in the players' path is a wolf cub to be rescued and eventually develop into a warrior sidekick. To take advantage of this feature the sidekick needs a character record sheet as far as I can tell. I created a new race called Wolf in the my creations section. Is this the right way to do this? If this animal becomes a character that I want the player to control do I then have the player create the character sheet and add it to the campaign?
If you've gotten this far thanks for reading my post. Any feedback is appreciated.
Hey, great suggestions! I would love to see all of this implemented as well!
I think I can help you with #4. You can create "Wolf Cub" as a homebrew monster to give it a stat sheet and description. If a player is going to have a companion you can add them in the Extras section of their character sheet. You can add a number of things here that a character has access to such as companions, familiars, sidekicks, wild shapes, or even vehicles.
"Monster" is kind of a loosely defined term at DNDBeyond. For example if you want a stat sheet for an NPC, even a friendly one, you either create an entire character for them or create a homebrew monster.
A "monster" in D&D rules is any creature that is not a Player Character.

Thanks, that extras tab just looked blank. I'll test out how to make that work.
