But Gems have random values assigned by the DM. That’s why the equipment has “other possessions” as a tab. there is not set I stone cost for any such gem to be standardized the way currency is. As the DM I can hand them a ruby worth 25g or one worth 1000g. How would they have that on the currency tab? What if it’s a less round number? It’s much easier to track those things on the system already in place than the system suggested.
I view gems as currency. If I track gems in "other possessions" how will I know how much money I have? Add it up every time? It's much easier to allow computers to do what they do best and compute this for me.

In the currency section it would be nice to be able to keep track of your gems too.
