One of the things that would be a quality of life upgrade for my table is to keep the same character but be able to set up your level progression and just hit "level up" when your DM reaches the milestone leveler. And if I wanted to play a tried and true character for a one-shot or something at a lower level I could level down that character while saving all my old level features. Would be huge for me as a caster since picking spells each time you level is such a time suck sometimes and no fun to do in game when you're trying to keep the session moving.
