I have been running games online with D&DBeyond for a decade now, and the VTT has been the tool I have been the most excited to see added.
While I am aware that the vast majority of users use Discord and other such tools to allow for communication while play with D&DBeyond, I have still found the lack of a chat functionality the main reason why I have chosen not to use the Maps function as my campaign's VTT of choice, for several reasons:
I stream my sessions, primarily so friends can watch the game if they want, and because of this, a VTT that has an integrated chat is preferable, as it makes for a smoother/simpler setup for streaming. If I were to make the switch to Maps as VTT, then I'd need to record a separate chat window, which is tedious.
An integrated chat is an avenue of conversation that is explicitly part of the game system, letting players who for one reason or another would prefer to communicate via text, communicate directly within the VTT, instead of being limited to a separate chat window. As not all my players have multi-monitor setups, communicating through a chat that is in another window or application often causes them to have to wait until someone goes to check what is within that separate chat. Integrated chat would offer more equal terms of communication within a session for a more diverse set of players with different needs.
It allows a space for communication that is directly part of the sessions content. Doing text role-play as your character in the same discord chat as the one people use of general-out of-game communication is more difficult. Having an integrated chat within the VTT would naturally lend itself well to this in-game communication, allowing a smoother separation of in-game and out-of-game communication.
Until there is a chat functionality within the Maps VTT, I see very little reason to move over to that system. Other VTTs that allow dice rolling from the D&DBeyond character sheet and other similar connectivity-features (like the AboveVTT, for example), are somewhat clunky to run with, and have been a point of friction for my players. If a chat feature is added to Maps, I would not hesitate at all to move over to it as my main tool of choice. If, however, there is no chat functionality, and the friction of using other VTT's together with D&DBeyond, I see it as more likely that I'd rather move on from D&DBeyond entirely, and run my games within a more complete system that meets our group's needs.
Given that there is a private message system within D&DBeyond's browser system, I'd assume that you have at least the basic capabilities to allow for something like an integrated chat for the VTT. I hope something like this can be added, as it would for me more than justify continuing to use D&DBeyond as my platform and tool of choice.
