Right now, tool and vehicle proficiencies live as a passive, unclickable text list in the "Proficiencies & Languages" box at the bottom of the character sheet. To actually get a clickable rolling button for a tool, a player is forced to manually create a "Custom Skill" in the main panel and tie it to one specific ability score.
However, per the core rules (and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything), tools are fluid and pair with whatever ability score fits the specific task (e.g., Strength for heavy forging, Constitution for a marathon forge session, or Wisdom for navigating a wagon). Because the current custom skill workaround forces you to lock a button to just one stat, players have to clutter their main skill list with a graveyard of duplicate custom entries (like "Str - Smithing," "Con - Smithing") just to keep their rolls accessible and accurate to the DM's call.
The Solution (Two Potential UI Options):
Option A (Active Proficiency Box Upgrade): Keep the tools right where they are in the "Proficiencies & Languages" box, but upgrade them from text into clickable, active buttons. Clicking a tool right there in its original section triggers the prompt, keeping the main skill list uncluttered and preventing unnecessary vertical scrolling.
Option B (Skill List Pin Toggle): Add a toggle next to Tool/Vehicle proficiencies that allows players to "Pin to Skill List" natively, moving the tool up to the main page alongside Athletics, Stealth, etc., for players who prefer all rolls in one column.
The Interaction (Dynamic Ability Popup): Regardless of whether Option A or B is implemented, clicking the tool button should trigger a small, clean popup menu asking: "Which ability score are you using for this roll?"
Once the player selects the appropriate stat (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, etc.), the sheet automatically processes the roll using that chosen ability modifier + the tool's correct proficiency/expertise level.
Why This Matters: D&D Beyond is currently undergoing massive tech updates to support the evolving rulesets. This quality-of-life feature would completely eliminate the need for clumsy, manual custom skill workarounds, clean up user sheets, and finally allow the digital sheet to natively honor the tactical flexibility of tabletop tool rules.
