First of all, I am NOT making their characters. I invite them over and they make it. They do not have their own account on dnd beyond, but I am still thankful for the help.
If they have a Gmail account, they can have a D&D Beyond Free account without a new login. You're working very hard to make a problem for yourself with a dozen solutions you're not willing to choose from. This isn't something you're going to solve.
1 or 2 character slots per purchased sourcebook would be a good compromise.
Again, that is probably up to Wizards, not Beyond, whether they can bundle certain stuff.
Storing data is also an ongoing expenditure, and I think it makes more sense for the business to separate them rather than bundling them together. Unless you are operating on a scale like Google and Amazon, it might not make financial sense for Beyond to sell character slots for a one time fee.
Subscription service is the business model everyone uses in modern day. Ala cart, custom ain’t gonna happen. It’s dead and buried. Choose one of the two options that’s offered for beyond accounts. Otherwise like everyone else said, you would have to juggle with the 6.

My reply was made years ago before Wizards bought Beyond, and I am not sure what part of my reply you are responding to.
Wizards continued Beyond's subscription model, and putting character slots under subscription seems reasonable to me since storing things is not free and is an ongoing expense.
I'll try to get them to get their own accounts. They're all new to d&d except for one.
