I have bought the Player's Handbook on amazon.co.uk and have been creating characters on D&D Beyond but I can't use any backgrounds or spells that are in that book. I was wondering if I could somehow redeem a code to have access to the backgrounds and spells. Hope you can help. Cheers.
There is no way to redeem content found in any book on D&D Beyond, the only exception being the code within the Essentials Kit.
This is because D&D Beyond is owned and run by Curse, a subsidiary of Fandom, and are a separate company from Wizards of the Coast who make D&D. Wizards licenses D&D content to D&D Beyond much like how they sell books to amazon to then sell on to you. Amazon, DDB and WotC are all different companies and there is no cross purchasing.
Your options for using non-SRD/Basic Rules content on DDB are:
Purchase the book(s) on DDB through the market place
Purchase just the options you need (races, subclasses, feats, spells etc) individually. Note that any money spent this way will count towards any later purchase of the book from which they originate
Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from the books you own into DDB for personal use only

Even if there was a way, how can they even verify purchases?
There is no way. Each book would need a code or something, and it is too late for old books.

Let's put a meter to that foolish bravery, for both you and the NPCs.
