Six years and still getting bumped. My table hit this same wall, and the virtual item workaround never stuck for us either, partly for the reason far92 ran into.
What we ended up using is a browser extension I wrote for my own group, Rollwarden. The part that solved this: the extra damage dice go into D&D Beyond's own roll before it's thrown, so a rapier plus Sneak Attack, or a longsword with Booming Blade, comes out as one roll with one total in the game log instead of three separate clicks and some mental arithmetic. Crits double the right dice too. It's cut a real amount of time out of our combats.
It also gave us somewhere to keep that gear. LinkinBreak's ZZZ container is exactly the upkeep we used to do by hand. Now the homebrew riders and the consumables sit in the extension's own panel instead of the character's inventory, so no zero-weight fake items and no extra rows in the Actions tab.
None of which is an argument against D&D Beyond just doing it, which is what this thread is actually asking for. AboveVTT's /dmg trick above is a good route too if you'd rather stay inside notes.
Please read my post from 2 comments above. They are in the process of fixing this and a host of other problems that were created before WOTC took over. Stop beating the dead horse while they're training a replacement.
I'm glad to see their changelog every week. However, I was just proposing a solution for now rather than a link to an AMA from 7 months ago.
I guess "Over for years" would be more correct then, as that is how long it's been since WotC acquired dndbeyond. Not sure that makes a huge difference.

Your opening line was "Six years and still getting bumped."
