Unless I'm missing some sort of theme settings, it would be nice if the compendium and the sort weren't so so so bright and white, its a strain on the eyes to read any of the longer compendium entries and this could definitely be solved by having a dark/night mode that you could switch to for easier reading

Agreed. Better use of space and color would be appreciated.
While some color might be nice, I disagree that all screen real-estate needs to be filled. I find it can quickly become distracting and look cluttered.
I think the current theme, white background with black text looks nice, however I would prefer if there's a toggle switch for night mode, which change the whole theme to a darker theme. For example, auto-detect time of the day, and if it's at night, default the theme to night mode (depending on one's time-zone), with a manual toggle to override it. That would be a nice feature to have.
They could just simply provide multiple themes like for web browsers. Have the "basic" theme be the current layout and have others that have different color schemes, borders, fonts, etc. Just put a button to choose what theme you like.

I like simple and utilitarian.
Right, I'm just saying that it would be easier to read if the background was dark and the text was lighter colored.
Some ornamentation might be order as well just so its not a boring, bare-bones column of lists, tables, and paragraphs.

Or perhaps custom themes??
I liked the actual colors, the background have a texture.
For me, white with fonts in black are good to read.
