This may be a bug report or feedback on pricing structure. Take it appropriately. Exposition isn't intended as a rant, just context for how I think.
I'm not a big "monster guy", so I passed on Volo's Guide until I decided to open up goblinoids as PC races in my new campaign. I went ahead and got the whole racial package and went merrily on my way until XGtE was released and I entered in the Aasimar Divine Soul. We'd been using a UA Favored Soul and the DMG Aasimar. As long as I was looking at the differences between the UA version and the final Divine Soul, I figured it'd be a good time to see what the difference was between the DMG aasimar and the VGtM aasimars.
I'd bought all the VGtM races, right? So, I might as well see if they are worth using, right?
Wrong. Turns out that the subraces are sold separately from the race. I don't get it. What's even the point of unlocking Aasimar w/o the subraces? That's totally non-intuitive.
I get that, if there'd been aquatic elves or svirfneblin in VGtM, that I'd buy them separately from the PHB content. I'd expect them to come in the "gimme all the races" package, though. It would have never even occurred to me that subraces aren't included in a "gimme the races" purchase option. I didn't scroll past the interminable list of monsters because I found exactly what (i thought) I wanted to buy: all the races.
Whenever the Mystic comes out, if I don't want the rest of the book, am I going to have to buy both the parent class and the subclasses?
Note: this isn't about the measly $3 to get the subraces. That's less than I spend on chips for a game session -- and a less unhealthy way to spend it. I'm just raising a flag about a jacked up pricing model for packages.
Note2: It appears that I have access to the aasimar sub-races in the character builder. This might be a bug, in either direction.
