I'm starting a short campaign soon and made six premade characters for it. I have added the characters as unassigned characters to the campaign and that worked great, but now I want to send out the invite link. I made a D&D Beyond test account for myself real quick to see what the player experience is like and it looks like you cannot join without claiming a character - and you can't view the character sheets before you claim them!
A work around I found for this is that you can claim and unassigned yourself from each character, which lets you view them all, but you do get a pop-up box which says that you won't be able to view the sheet if someone else claims them. So it sounds like this work around only works until one of my other players tries to use it and it screws over the last person using the work around.
Am I missing something? Is there a usable work around to accomplish what I am hoping to achieve?
The only thing I can think of would be to make a fake campaign and add copies of the premade characters to the campaign - then repeat that process for every player! This way each player would have their own campaign to view all the characters in and after figuring out which one they wanted they could then claim that option in the real campaign. This sounds like a lot of work for something that should be a simple feature. Am I missing something?
You can still view them even if they are not assigned so tell your players to just view them and not claim them until everyone has seen what's there and had a discussion.

How does this work? As a player in my test account, I clicked the link to join the campaign using chrome on my desktop and it forces me to claim a character before letting me see any of them. It looks like I can unassigned myself as a player from the character after I claim it, but it doesn't let me view the character sheets of the other characters unless I claim them first.
Can't you just set the character to public and send them all the links? I think you still can't see a few details such as backstory, but that's probably good.
How much do they need to see? If they're trying to choose between Llyrodren the elven ranger, famed for his marksmanship and woodcraft, or Goldreth Faithforger the dwarven cleric, loyal armorclad acolyte of Talos the Stormlord, I don't think the details on the character sheet matter enough to affect preferences. Just give them the name, class and a 2-line description of each so they can decide and claim their pick.

They need to view the whole sheet sadly. Backstory included.

I can't fathom why, but it's your show.

We're an RP heavy group. It's important for them. Usually they write their own backstory and some of them are several pages. We have fun w/ it and they are good a separating player vs character knowledge.
But anyway, it looks like the work around with giving each player their own campaign to evaluate the characters is gonna be the only way to do this if I want them to see all the information.

Not sure if this will help

maybe you can export each character to pdf and send it to the players to look at. Once they pick their character follow the link above instructions?
haven’t tried it so don’t know if it will work

I tried this, but the pdf cuts off text for some of the fields that have a large amount of it. Not the best option. Thanks though!

Only the DM of the campaign and the person who has claimed the character can see the backstory

Just export the character sheets as PDF's and post them up for your players to look at them.
