Shamelessly stealing a fun idea from critical role crew, I made a playlist for my first long-spanning character and got curious if anyone else has done something similar?

ECARYS
A Wood Elf Bard of the College of Lore. Ecarys has a past on the wrong side of the law, portraying as a noble from the forest kingdom of his home to gain clout among the myriad peoples of the vast Empire of Landon where he has followed his great ambitions. He meets the party just as his cover is about to blow and he has to relocate.
Ecarys is jovial and charismatic, and prefers to solve conflicts nonviolently. He has a pragmatic side through his rough experiences as a charlatan, but does his best to maintain a moral compass even if he doesn't think twice about breaking the law if he deems it necessary. He is selfish and knows it, but also eager to help others and almost desperate for approval.
1 Finding Sein - Gareth Coker Every story has an introduction, and as Ecarys was my introduction to the wonder and magic of the world of tabletop RP, so shall this track be for you into this playlist. The atmosphere of mystique promises adventure!
2 Lone Digger - Caravan Palace An elf walks into a bar... To the beat of this tune! Ecarys is at home in taverns, performing or relaxing, doesn't matter to him as long as there is promise of a good time.
3 Eagleheart - Stratovarius The wide world opens up before our adventurers as they set out to the wilderness. In his songs Eca regails these journeys. Or at least their most epic highs, and this song is near four minutes of one pure, epic high!
4 Original Prankster - the Offspring Ecarys does not shy away from deceit if it gets him his way. Never take a bard on his word ;)
5 Perfect Enemy - t.A.T.u. Under a bold facade there is insecurity aplenty in Ecarys' heart. Feelings of worthlessness fuel his bravery, constantly striving to prove himself in the eyes of others. Self doubt sours his soul like poisonous honey, an image perfectly captured by the sugary voiced russian electropop duo's melancholy lyrics.
6 Hurt - Johnny Cash We dwell a bit longer with mr Cash's heart- breaking cover dealing with harming those closest to you with your bad habits, a circumstance all too familiar to Ecarys who is no stranger to the wrong side of the law.
7 Kickstart My Heart - Mötley Crüe Pluck your heart out on those strings and make the crowd roar, mr Minstrel! Nothing soothes a fragile ego like the adulation of the masses, and Eca knows how to make a good time. ... Also Ecarys has a tendency to to get himself unconscious in fights so a friend pointed out that this pick also had a more literal fit for our reckless bard :D
8 Mysteria - Edguy The world is a dangerous place, evil sorcerers, corrupt warlords and mythical beasts vying for your blood. Even the elements are trying to kill you!
9 Hero - Family of the Year Responsibility weighs down anyone. Though Eca's disposition is far from the humble tones of this ballad's lyrics he can definitely relate to the feeling of needing a break once in a while from the expectations thrust upon him.
10 The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie - Colter Wall Like our young Canadian songwright here, Eca too is a weaver of stories. The devil would know him for a string plucker by the state of his hands just as he did mr Wall.
11 Wasted Years - Iron Maiden Another city, another quest, a string of taverns and city lights blurred into a history of travel with no end in sight. Makes one reflect, you know?
12 Piano Man - Billy Joel A performer at heart, Eca has sung many a memory to all manner of folk huddled over a drink in a mood for a melody.
13 Never Say Die - the 69 Eyes I wanted to end on a high note, and then remembered this Finnish band's song titled with what could easily be Eca's motto. Balancing feelings of disconnect and worthlessness with a kind of stubborn positivity you can't help but admire, the 69 Eyes leaves us with a rock anthem that gives a pump into the chest and under the foot, tinged with underlying melancholy yet carrying on towards brighter days with determined surety.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"You need to believe in things that aren't true. How else can they become?" -Death
I must say, I’ve done this for characters from novels I’ve worked on, but since I usually DM I don’t have any dnd characters I’ve stuck with long enough to do this for. However, there is one group that I recently got started with dnd. One of the players got super excited about the game and decided to try writing his own session to DM. The game he ended up running is heavily home brewed (as are the characters we played) and is based on Dark Souls (which I’ve never played before). Considering this player had only played dnd twice before deciding to DM I wasn’t expecting us all to become so attached to our characters and the plot in just one session...but we did. Anyways, back to the topic of this post lol. After some discussion as to where to take the story, one of the other players and I found a song that perfectly fits the plot and our characters. Hence we adopted it as our theme song. The song is called “To the Grave” by Aviators. Funny thing is, I believe it’s based on the game Demon Souls. Which, considering where the DMs inspiration came from, is rather fitting. If anyone’s wondering, our group is made up of a half-orc barbarian, a scourge aasimar paladin (oath of conquest), and a dragonborn rogue. I’ve been trying to find some theme songs for each of our characters as well, but we really need to wait until we get further in the game lol. Sorry if this post seems like it doesn’t belong on this thread, I just thought I’d share the one song I had—then it turned into this monstrous post. Anyway, I enjoyed the playlist and story you provided! And I look forward to seeing posts from people who actually have playLISTS unlike myself lol.
I never thought a whole playlists worth of music to my characters, one or two theme songs at best, but when Phaeoron introduced Ecarys's playlist it seemed like a fun little exercise. So I made for one of my favorite characters who sadly passed away at lvl 2. Still, She was fun to play so I'm thinking of bringing her back someday.
In short, Cecilia Batari is a tabaxi alchemist on a journey to gather fame, fortune and the acceptance of her home village who scorned her for her short and weak physique. She's smart, quick to act and cares little of laws and customs. She helps anyone in need, though she decides how to help because she's the smartest one around, despite what the one being helped thinks or even wants the help. She's confident, sharp as a knife and with an ego thrice her minuscule size.
Full backstory here, if you're interested:
Cecilia Batari is a runt of a tabaxi, born as youngest member to a family of glassblowers. Half of the time her parents were sailing from town to town, selling their wares and enjoying their travels. Cecilia and her two older brothers took care of the shop in the meanwhile, though Cecilia found the routine dull and repetitive. She used to sneak away at first opportunity to explore the village and its surroundings. Tabaxi of the village are very proud of their physicality and every one of them strives to be as strong, dexterous or fast as possible and the sight of a weak, short runt is derogatory for them. Many villagers either ignored Cecilia completely or treated her horribly, spitting at the sight of her or snarling at her. After hearing how their daughter was treated in the village, her parents decided to take her with them.
So Cecilia boarded the next ship with her parents. During a long, and quickly turned boring, trip, Cecilia began to pester the crew to teach her knots, navigating and other skills sailors used. She was an exceptionally quick learner and her parents took notice of this. They began to gather books for her, and she kept herself busy devouring their knowledge and learning how to utilize it. She was especially interested in medicine and alchemy and did her own experiments which sometimes led to huge gouts of smoke or small explosions. One day they were visiting a small town at the coast of Alsus when Cecilia’s parents heard of an elderly alchemist in a port city of Stormvault who had no apprentice. They thought this would be a good chance for Cecilia to find a profession and a place far from their home village. They contacted the alchemist, Raul Ghott, who promised to take Cecilia for a couple of days to see how she would do under his mentorship. The young feline and the old man worked well together and so it was decided that Cecilia would stay with him.
Four years passed as Cecilia worked under Raul. She had both the wit and courage a striving alchemist needed, though her eagerness to jump straight to experiments without proper precautions led to many a heated argument with her master. Their neighbours complained about frequent bright flashes in the middle of the night, muffled explosions and chromatic clouds of foul smoke around the alchemist’s shop. Even though Raul was proud of her apprentice, constant complaints and arguments wore the old man down. He came up with an idea: He began dropping hints of a great alchemical mystery and of his own journeys to shape his craft. Cecilia began pondering that it would be best if she travelled a while and searched for her own way both as an alchemist and a person, and if she solved the great mystery, fame and fortune would follow. So she gathered her meager belongings and declared that she would be back once she was the most famous alchemist in Alsus.
Cecilia Batari is an exceptionally short runt of a tabaxi, standing barely three feet tall. She has a dull orange fur with dark stripes while her lower chin, front of her neck and her stomach are cream-white. She has large, pale-blue eyes and a thick, striped tail. She wears a fine long jacket over a supple leather armour and a pointy green hat with a vibrant red feather. She carries a small backpack with her alchemy tools inside a sturdy wooden box on top of it. Her weapons of choice include a shield, a short curved sword and a sling which she uses to launch small enchanted stones.
In her childhood Cecilia suffered from discrimination and humiliation because of her small size in a society focused on physical perfection. This caused her to become distrustful towards societies laws and customs. She thinks that everyone should think for themselves what actions are right and wrong instead of blindly following people around them. Because she is smarter than anyone, it should be obvious that local laws and customs don’t apply to her, right? And if she helps someone, it is up to her to decide what kind of help to offer, as clearly she knows better.
Cecilia has a strong self-esteem and speaks matter-of-factly, as needless courtesies just slow things down. Currently Cecilia is looking for new alchemical and magical components for new potions and tinctures, but especially she keeps her eyes open for Red King and Silver Queen, two legendary substances which, when combined correctly, produce golden perfection, whatever it means. Over everything else, Cecilia is after fame and recognition, both because she feels she has earned it, and so that one day she can return to her home village and show everyone how accomplished and successful she has become so that the shame she has brought to her family can finally be erased.
And here's the playlist:
The playlist starts by describing how she comes across to others and the kinds of things she's after. Then comes the feelings of uncertainty, seclusion and longing before she starts to accept her lot, fighting twice as hard against the unjust world. At least until her early demise to a wizards trap.
Sera was never - Dragon Age
Only recently I noticed how many similarities Cecilia and Sera share: brash, confident know-it-alls who still try to do the right thing. The song gives a great idea about the personality Cecilia exhibits.
Battery - Van Canto (cover)
I mean, through-out the whole song Cecilias family name is repeated. Of course it gets a spot in the list.
The greatest team that was never was - Cog is Dead
A song about a brilliant female scientist who doesn't notice the advantage of treating someone as as their equal.
Harder Better Faster Stronger - Daft Punk
Always driving herself to be better AND utter confidence of the fact that she is.
The Alchemist - Iron Maiden & Set the universe on fire - glory hammer
Songs describing the scale of powers she is after and the dangers that come with them.
Rich Girl - Gwen Stefani
Cecilia is focused on gathering riches and fame, though she knows that there are things money can't buy.
Misplaced - Sonata Arctica
Scorned in her home village and constantly reminded how different she is in a land of humans makes her feel isolated and lonely. She yearns back home yet she cannot return and keeps searching for her place.
The dead can't testify - Billy Talent
Song describes how she felt she was treated back home though she had done nothing wrong.
Home Is Where the Heart Is - Lady Antebellum
Positive thinking starts shining through as she travels and she accepts the fact that her home is where she is happy.
You're the best - from Karate Kid
Just her utter moxie and confidence on how she can do anything she puts her mind into.
Dancer and the Moon - Blackmore's Night
Thanks to her travelling partners and how they treated her, Cecilia learned how to let loose and enjoy herself.
The Gumbo Song - Cog is Dead
Her potions and concoctions are magical and potent (though some… unforseen effects may occur)
Lady of the Worlds - Miracle of Sound
Cecilia dances between danger, her own principles while still trying to help those in need.
Danger Line - Avenged Sevenfold
Defiance against the world and fate, yet she never meant to hurt others. In her last moments, she hopes she didn't cause pain to her friends and that, despite her not relying on her god, he takes back to the land of her ancestors.
Hell to your Doorstep for one. Which is fitting because the DM once described my rogue's backstory as 'Cinderlla x Count of Monte Christo.' Though this is more for her in the past than current day, because the events of the campaign have her questioning her quest for vengeance. But very much fits her starting out the campaign, looking to learn about her enemies and plot their downfall.
Weight of the World has come to fit more as the campaign goes on. As her list of enemies only seems to grow, and the stakes of the fighting grow larger and heavier, but still marching on and hoping. Hoping she'll be able to lead the party through this to the end, but not knowing if she'll be able to keep them all alive.
Shamelessly stealing a fun idea from critical role crew, I made a playlist for my first long-spanning character and got curious if anyone else has done something similar?

Here is the playlist for my character: Fiego Laurentis de Gryphon
Canto alla vita
alla sua bellezza
ad ogni sua ferita
ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty
To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me
The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
Wanna tell us a bit about who Fiego Laurentis of the Griffin is?

Fiego Laurentis de Gryphon is the youngest son of the youngest son of one of the Noble Houses of Waterdeep. Here's his backstory. Here's his character sheet.
Think Will Turner from Pirates 1, but with Iñigo Montoya's voice.
