I don't like to think I was as bad as all that. I can't remember ever making contact with someone who left my game and complaining about them doing it. Even so, I did start out with a huge pile of rules so that I could make a low-magic setting based on Ancient Rome work the way I wanted it to. Turned out not one of my ideas was a good one. I kept trying to force people to play as humans. I kept trying to force people not to play Evil, and then ultimately, I decided that I would only allow Lawful Neutral, Lawful Good, Neutral Good and Chaotic Good. My goodness, that was silly of me.
Were you wrong to leave the game? No. At least I don't think so. I wish I could offer better advice, but the whole reason we play games is to have fun, and if you're not, do something about it.
You're never wrong to decide that you don't want to continue with a campaign. It's a game, it's supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, there's no reason to stick around.
As for that GM's behavior, it certainly sounds rude. Unless you were being really rude and accusatory yourself, refusing to apologize for his actions and DMing you to accuse you of being angry for failing a saving throw is uncool behavior.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
