Can you make your Battle Smith iron defender look like yourself or does it have to be an dog cat something like that because i wanted to make something that i could arm and put armor on to buff up the defender and give it some attack powers so i am wondering is that something that i can do with the iron defender or not
You can make it look like anything you want within the very few limitations offered by the statblock ("You determine the creature’s appearance and whether it has two legs or four; your choice has no effect on its game statistics") - so medium in size and no flight, things like that. I know it says two legs or four, but I don't think any DM is going to have a problem if you want something shaped like an insect or milliped or a snake or anything else that doesn't have two or four legs either.
Buffing it up with extra weaponry and/or armor is definitely outside the rules though; there's a statblock and you're supposed to stick to that, so the AC is what it is and the available actions are what they are. Doesn't mean a DM can't allow you to make some improvements, just that you shouldn't assume they will, unlike the aesthetic changes above.

However consider that for balancing it would probably not be able to do anything a dog shaped one could not do, though that is also up to the DM.
No armors RAW (it has no armor/weapon/tool proficiencies whatsoever and anyway and the 15 base AC equals 14 AC medium armor +1 from the dex mod). I definetly would not allow it to wear armor. Or I guess I would and apply all the disadvantages of wearing an armor you are not proficient with. (disadv on basically anything & can't cast spell (not relevant)).
So if i made it look like my pc and then gave it a ring or something could it do that? Say it had a ring that when it was put on made a choking cloud kill cloud or something around the one that puts it on well it wouldn't be hurt by the ring but that would be something that it could use as long as the ring was the thing doing the effect couldn't it i would just say walk up to the monsters and put on the ring then wait and fire on the baddy from range couldn't i do that?

Ask your DM. It's a construct and not a character, so whether a ring's (or any item's) magic would even be able to activate while it's on such a critter is unclear.

As a GM I would not allow the Iron Defender to activate any magic items. You the player Character would have to do that on you turn as one of your actions. So, the ring of Cloud Kill (as an example) your character would have to spend an action either activating it, or in the case of a "cursed" always on when worn version actively putting the ring on the Defender.
And even then I may question for some time if an Iron Defender counts as alive enough for the purposes of magic items functioning properly. (have had similar situations/rulings break the game in the past).
