I've never played before, but am building a gnome in case I play a campaign. I'm wondering if I should be a bard or something else. Also, what's the class with the most to do with engineering.
Best is sort of relative, especially if you play with flexible racial attribute bonuses. It sounds trite, but play what you really want to play - the goal is to have fun, rather than to have the most optimized bag of stats. The class most to do with engineering is without a doubt the Artificer, who turns magic into science - they're tech wizards specializing in building armor, building magical cannons, building a battle pet or crafting alchemical items respectively depending on subclass.
