So, my character died, and my buddy is changing PCs. We thought about doing a character-dou, that helps each other in combat. He is going to play a Dragonborn Oath of Devotion Paladin. I thought about going Moondruid and letting him use my wild shape as a mount. But we will be playing "Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage", so I don't know how viable that is (because of space, and because it is pretty unlikely to meet new beasts I think?). So, what is a class that I can play to get a good synergy with my buddies Paladin? (besides Wolf totem barb.)
Well let's think about the pillars of play, not just combat. Combat, Social, and Exploration.
Paladins are great tanks, can heal, and can handle dealing damage as well. You're however missing out on crowd control type spells as well as area damage. Since you're focusing here, I like bards and druids. Bards excel at the social side better than any class and will help with all the skills as well. I like eloquence personally and will likely make one at some point but any of them will be a great addition to your duo. Magical secrets can further hone in on what will work best for your party. Druids could also fill the holes. The whole, ride the druid thing is kinda overdone and weird in my opinion so maybe look at a more caster focused druid. I think circle of stars looks like a lot of fun. Both options will help with crowd control and area of effect spells. Wizards could be great too.
Ultimately D&D doesn't really need to have complete party synergy to be fun. Play what excites you.
hey, thanks for the reply! I know that I don’t need to play a specific role. Me and my friend just thought about playing two charcoal that specifically complement and help each other. Like old comrades, or brothers or something like that. 🙂
A large part of that is actually the roleplay - that and taking time to go over each other’s character sheets to see what can feed into or be feed off of. If you work to share tactics and strategy you will have far more complimentary than any specific build. Of course that discussion really is role play as well 😁. I mean a halfling rogue dodging in and out around the big Dragonborn Paladin getting in sneak attacks and then hiding behind the Paladin would be a nasty combo if they are working together and sort of know what the other will or is likely to do. Make the rogue an arcane trickster allows for some minor spell use as well. A ranger that provides cover fire while the Paladin closes then uses spells and ranged fire to channel foes into the paladin’s area would be another. It’s really more about the roleplay than the build when two characters mesh really well. Builds create characters, teamwork/roleplay creates teams that greater than the sum of their parts.
