What about a backlight projector setup? Seems you can do it from behind an acrylic pane. No shadows?
I could make a really cool set up with a backlit one. Never thought about that. Might have to try that the next time I get a decent influx of funds. Ohhhh I even have a 1920's era garage I'm gonna be remolding soon!!! Ohh the possibilities. Could make it into a Pub lol.
Projector on the roof into a mirror which displays on the table.
Second monitor mounted on the roof facing the players so i can show them images and handouts.
All controlled from the laptop which runs (Realm Works, Hero Lab, MapTools, Syrinscape, Inspiration Pad Pro 3)
Realm Works controls the player facing screen via the Player Screen function.
MapTool controls the virtual map and fog of war.
All the campaign content is within Realm Works, no need for books.
Syrinscape plays to a bluetooth speaker.
Running out of space to store minis and terrain.
How do you like the projected set up. My group didnt enjoy it much. We ended up switching to a system I built in Cryengine3 which everyone seems to love a bit more. I personally enjoyed the projected set up some but still had some massive draw backs for us though. Really cool to see other people using it though!!
Love it. It's quick and efficient to change maps and work the fog. If the background you can see copious amounts of hirst arts terrain. That is awesome but takes too long to Setup and should the story change to a different map it really affects the flow of the game so the projector is much better.
Sorry gents, my game space is virtual. My players are transported to a new, fantasy map as each session progresses. Oh yea, there is indeed mood music. It's majestic. :D
That's awesome! Wish I wasn't at work, or I'd show mine. Its kinda funny, as my gf and I recently moved in together, I INSISTED on getting a nice dining room table... by far and large for playing DnD. Of course she and my friends make fun of me for this occasionally, but I'll be the one laughing maniacally when they fail a saving throw at our sweet new table! :D
We're still waiting to see your game space! Have you been at work this WHOLE time??? :)

I've been caught!
Haha, honestly I just forgot to take a pic. It did go swimmingly this past weekend when I hosted DnD! :D I'll take a pic when I get home from work :)
Thanks I use to wear it all the time~ Now I wear my skyrim, bioshock, and dragon age hoodies a lot. :) And it is a very fun group. Sad that most of those people don't play with us anymore.

Sadly..my "Game Area" is where ever my laptop is. Or the desktop. I need to join a game that isn't through Roll20. I feel like I am missing out a bit by only playing online :(

Its not much - but its portable enough to play at whatever house we want to.
The map surface has removable legs, multi color LED lighting (controlled by the DM) and is tall enough to fit a pint glass or can of your favorite beverages - as well as books, character sheets, tablets, etc....
I don't have any photos - but one of our guys moved 5 hours away and so last session we used webcams and Google Hangouts to video conference him in to the rest of the table and give him an overhead view of the map as well. He played from the comfort of his couch and was still able to interact with everyone.
It's not much but I'll be sure to take a picture of my setup the next time that my group meets (should be this Friday or Sunday). My groups usually play out of my den on a round table (because we're all equal, no fighting for chair space, etc). Sometimes, when the weather permits, we take it out to my back patio though. There we play on a square picnic table beneath a gazebo that's sporting orb-shaped party lights. It's quite a chill time on nice summer nights. I'll try to get a few shots of that setup too next time that we play out there.

Here's my view for the day.
Our gaming space will be changing very soon as our host is moving but here is an old picture of our current space.
