The DM is sharing but Guild artisan does not show up as a choice. I would buy it but cannot figure out how?
You can check with others in the campaign if it's showing up for them. If not, go to 1). If it is, try 2).
1) You can doublecheck the sharing (click on the content management button in the campaign view, check if the PHB or Descent from Avernus is on the list - they can be blocked, that doesn't matter for this purpose, but one of them has to be on the list for the GA to be shared). If they're sharing just the background, not the entire book, it should be listed as such. If you don't see a button for content management, that means sharing is not enabled.
2) You can check if your entitlements are in sync, and if not sync them (https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace > at the top of that tab it'll tell you of this is in order or not).
If both fail, let us know - though I don't immediately have an idea about what it would be then.
So I subscribed to get the GUILD ARTISAN background but it still does not show up. What am I doing wrong?
Subscriptions don't grant access to content, you must purchase it or have it shared with you

Subscribing doesn't grant you content. Do you own the PHB or Descent into Avernus, or is someone sharing it with you?

Go to: Player's Handbook - Sourcebooks - Marketplace - D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com)
Scroll down. You'll see Guild Artisan / Guild Merchant $1.99.
You can buy that as opposed to the full book.

You may need to create the character within the campaign which is sharing the material to access it.
It seems I may have overlooked the more obvious possibility. :p Good point!
