This friday we have a nice bundle sale. I was looking into buying the Legendary Bundle. Since I already own many of the books this bundle only cost me 191 dollar. But when I would buy the missing books by themselves I only pay 91 dollar. Does anyone know why we need to pay 100 dollar extra for the Legendary Bundle?
I've read on here that it is because it uses the FULL price of each book to work out your discount, rather than the price that you actually paid for each book.
Your credit towards any bundle is based on what you paid for the books, not the current or full value of the books.
Say DDB had a bundle of 10 books at $254.92 ($29.99*10 - 15%)
You buy two of those books on sale with 10% off; that gives you $53.98 credit, bringing the bundle down to $200.94
However, if you hadn't bought those two books on sale, you'd have spent $59.98, bringing the bundle down to $194.94
The reason there is that $100 difference is because of the sum total of all the money you've saved buying the books on sale. What that $100 gets you over buying them individually is a 15% discount off all future books added to that bundle. Now, this would require you to purchase 23 books with that 15% discount to make back what you paid, so the decision is yours
This is why the bundle system becomes progressively worse with every new book. If you bought the Legendary bundle way back when DDB was new it was cheap or at least affordable. Now it's way too costly for new people to pick up, so they build their collection up step by step first and will use sales to cut down on prices, and if they then decide to bite the bullet and grab the bundle it turns out doing so will cost them about half the discounts they got on individual books. It was a neat proposition at first, but since the only real benefit is always being guaranteed that 15% discount without having to wait for a sale and it's a big chunk of change I don't think it's all that interesting anymore unless you have money to burn (in which case, ironically, you need that 15% off less than most).

Yeah. One of my table buddies/frequent DMs bought the Lego bundle back when it was roughly four hundred, I distinctly recall chipping in a hundred fitty to help defray the cost. Now the legendary bundle is well north of a thousand dollars, far beyond the reach of most any reasonable consumer, and is basically a joke/gimmick at this point.
"Spend over a thousand dollars so you can save money on D&D books!" "That's...that's not how fiscal responsibility works q_q..."

Just to put it another way.
The cost of the Legendary bundle is full retail -15%.
You receive a credit for books you already bought at the price you PAID for them - not at full retail.
If you purchased books during one of the big sales with 20%, 25% or 33% off or more - you only receive credit on the bundle for what you paid.
The bundle has a 15% discount so by purchasing the bundle you are effectively paying BACK any discount you previously received that was greater than 15% - so that you get a 15% discount on all books and have a 15% discount on new books.
However, books might go on sale occasionally for greater than a 15% discount - if you wait and buy them then you pay less.
In your case, getting the books you are missing will cost $91 .. the bundle costs $191 because you are paying back DDB all the discounts on what you have already purchased that were greater than 15%. (i.e. you saved $100 buying everything on sale at greater than 15% off - to get the bundle you have to pay pack those discounts and accept the 15% bundle discount on everything).
P.S. As another example, in my case, looking at the player bundle - I purchased the PHB, Xanathar's and Tasha's previously when they were on sale (20% off?) - so if I want to buy the player bundle right now on sale it would cost me $36.00 to add the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide while that book would cost me $29.99 if purchased separately. (If I really want SCAG and wait for a sale - I'll likely get it for 15% or more off retail at some point and save even more).
As a result, if you have purchased DDB content previously on sale for greater than the bundle discounts then it is NOT cost effective to ever purchase the bundle since you are paying back any earlier discounts greater than 15%.
It depends. If you plan on getting enough books that you'd save more than $6.01, then you'd be better off getting the bundle.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to thus, unfortunately.
