Ok so without much back ground i have a warrior that serves as a tank for our group. Not intentional i just draw attention as the warrior.. it's time to select the first feat. I am looking at two options.
Option 1 : Heavy weapons master.
I can change to a two handed weapon and lose my shield AC but higher output. Now per DND Beyond it states
You've learned to put the weight of a weapon to your advantage, letting its momentum empower your strikes. You gain the following benefits:
On your turn, when you score a critical hit with a melee weapon or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with one, you can make one melee weapon attack as a bonus action.
Before you make a melee attack with a heavy weapon that you are proficient with, you can choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If the attack hits, you add +10 to the attack's damage.
Does this mean i can take the feat and not use a heavy weapon (at least for now) and still use the first part of the bonus action? it does not say heavy weapon in that line but specifically mentions heavy in the next. This would mean i can maintain my shield for the moment while i am getting full plate and then get the feat ability.
Or option 2 : duel weapon fighting
per DND Beyond states
You master fighting with two weapons, gaining the following benefits:
You gain a +1 bonus to AC while you are wielding a separate melee weapon in each hand.
You can use two-weapon fighting even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding aren't light.
You can draw or stow two one-handed weapons when you would normally be able to draw or stow only one.
could i then continue to use my melee weapon and shield sacrifice the +1 ac bonus and use my shield as my second weapon (i understand it would be an improvised) and my melee and then later add the shield master to add to it. Shield master
Shield Master
You use shields not just for protection but also for offense. You gain the following benefits while you are wielding a shield:
If you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to try to shove a creature within 5 feet of you with your shield.
If you aren't incapacitated, you can add your shield's AC bonus to any Dexterity saving throw you make against a spell or other harmful effect that targets only you.
If you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you can use your reaction to take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, interposing your shield between yourself and the source of the effect.
With Shield master now adding an attack capability would this now count as a weapon and i would also get the the duel wield ac bonus now?
Option 1: You are correct that you can use any weapon to qualify for the first part of that feat.
Option 2: Shields are shields, they aren't improvised weapons. That would be a DM call, but RAW, that isn't how shields work. If you are using a shield as a weapon, I'd personally rule you lose the armor class bonus as you aren't trying to defend anymore.
Option 3: It's important to note that the bonus action shove is not an attack that does damage, its specifically a shove dealing 0 damage.
Do you have a HP problem vs an offensive problem, if that is the case you might look at tough for HP. But IIRC as a fighter you get another feat at 6th level so you can have a more leeway in what you pick then other classes.
So in general what is your PC role in the group/combat/noncombat situations and do they have any issues with that role's. Then what can I do to help in those areas.

Thoughts and opinions are welcome
