I wanted to create a Padlock build based on the Fairy race. Dm wont allow the flying feature so we are instead giving my character a free feat. I want to go into Archfey warlock and Oath of the ancient paladin. I was going to grab pact of the chain and have a pseudodragon for flavor. We are starting at lvl 5. Any suggestions on how to start the build and what spells/asi/feats to take or how to proceed in future levels would be appreciated. Thanks for the suggestions/help.
Thanks for the replies ill consider those also if I wanted to use the faerie dragon stat block instead for my companion who I will be making my patron as well for my backstory how would you balance that to be on par with other familiars. Dm is thinking up of ways as well but i would like to hear other peoples suggestions.
I would ask the DM is they have any special "feats" that could enhance your pseu in place of the free racial feat as that is the theme I am getting off your post. Or you might even make 3 feats for the GM to consider and see what they say...and send them the feats way before game so they have time to look over them and think about them.
For your starting feat, I think thematically, and tactically, one of the most useful spells you can grab is Fey Touched. It's a truly great feat, since you not only gain the spell Misty Step and can use it once-per-day for free, you still just outright learn the spell so you can cast it with spell slots, along with the other spell the feat grants. Of the spells available as part of Fey Touched, Silvery Barbs is probably the best one. You can basically force an opponent to have disadvantage on an attack, ability check, or saving throw, and the spell is triggered by them succeeding on their roll, not just on making the roll, so you'll never waste it on someone who fails anyway, plus you can give yourself (or an ally) advantage on their next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. It's a total beast of a 1st level spell... and honestly you should check with your DM to see if they'll even allow it, since it is kind of overpowered and I've heard some DM's just ban it outright. If the DM doesn't allow it, I'd recommend taking Dissonant Whispers instead... it's normally a Bard-only spell, but the coolest detail is that it forces movement from a target, and that movement still triggers Attacks of Opportunity... usually forced movement doesn't.
I'm assuming that you'll be more Paladin than Warlock... Warlock pays off more at early levels, while Ancients Paladins has some really great spells that require a deeper investment into the class. Aura of Warding at level 7 is really great, since it gives you and allies near you outright resistance to all damage from spells. I'd recommend starting as a Paladin... it gives you heftier starting HP, and you can have your martial weapons and armor right off the bat. If you start as a Paladin, you can also choose to be a DEX-based warrior just in case that works better for your character... DEX is, on average, more useful than STR, but whichever one you choose to focus on... I would recommend trying to max out your primary attack skill first, and although you want high CHA, I think it would be better to focus on spells that don't rely as much on saving throws and such.
As for Invocations, I'd recommend Gift of the Everliving Ones, which gives you some great survivability with your Familiar nearby... especially since, as a Paladin, you can easily heal yourself. For most Warlock subclasses GotEO is a little tricky to maximize since very few Warlocks have any kind of self-heal, but being a Paladin means if you're low on health and choose to invest a spell slot in touching yourself in Cure Wounds you're guaranteed to heal the maximum possible damage.
