The screen and the map don't make up for 20 extra bucks in my calculations at least.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Monsters and Races are excellent. Backgrounds and magic items are good, not many but cover the necessities. Ships are good.
Personally I don't need a guide to building Wildspace systems, but I can see why some people will benefit from a more detailed system or advice on how to do this. Yes some random generation tables would be helpful for everybody.
As for ship to ship combat, again it covers what it needs to. If you want a step by step guide, go read up about historical naval battles or go read some quality sci-fi books. Sorry, I have little sympathy for unimaginative DMs or those who can't spend a small amount of time to do a little reading around a subject for inspiration.
The premise is really good for the light of Xaryxis and there's some excellent ideas, but I feel it's either too long for a setting book adventure or should have been fleshed out more into a full campaign with a little more freedom. I also think this is a similar problem with Strixhaven too.
What I didn't like is the lack of any details about wildspaces. They should have provided not only ships and monsters, but also possible areas where those monsters could be found. A table for generating crystal spheres wildspaces would suffice. Like the concept of spelljamming requires some form of destination. Where do people go?
This the only book in my 18 years of gaming that left an official complaint on the WOTC website.
The only thing that really gets me if I'm not supposed to flying around in space what am supposed to do...
As a DM I have only one location Rock of Bral barely described at all the original book was just under 100 pages...
There is no fluff or story of Spelljammer universe... there nor even a Gazetteer of Realmspace which what I thought at minimum would be there...SCAG, Eberron, Wildmount, Ravinca, and Theros all have more usable setting in it and cost less... even the Acquisitions Incorporated added more use to my game than 5ed Spelljammer...

The idea is to use spelljammer to get from one of those above mentioned worlds to another. It isn’t a universe, it’s a way from getting from one part of the multiverse to another, and some stuff you might see along the way. I get that people want there to be more stuff in between these worlds, and better ideas for populating various wild space areas, and I’m not trying to say they are wrong for wanting that.
But to say there’s nothing besides rock of bral, and then list off half a dozen places the spelljammer can take the players doesn’t really mesh. Otherwise, what should WorC do? Say, here’s a wild space area. It’s got two habitable planets in it. Now you, the DM, can go ahead and homebrew those two worlds. Your welcome. Or, instead of it being random, the DM can choose where the jammer goes, and actually be prepared when the players arrive. Just like now, when players are walking across a continent, and the DM decides where the town is, and what’s in it.
Well, I am complaining, because their products ARE expensive, I do not feel I am getting my money's worth. I feel like WotC owes me my money back in addition to Fleshing out the Spelljammer books. I mean, can I get rules for fantasy space battles in the book about fantasy space battles? Or is that just up to the DM?
This is how WotC and 5E design phylosophy could be summed up.
"Thanks for the 50$ sucker, now ask your DM to fix the halfbaked mess we released at full price, what? doing our jobs we're paid for?, what are you?, insane?"
This Edition had TOO many "yeah your DM can fix that or come up with something", yeah ok maybe...but if as a DM i buy a book about a setting for premium price i would expect premium content..., and not having to correct/tweak/fix/homebrew 60% of your book...

Then why not mention any of that in the book... why no Realmspace, Kyrinnspace, or Greyspace which are a part of the Spelljammer setting? Homebrew is no solution for bad content.
A setting book is supposed to stand alone SCAG, Eberron, Wildmount, Ravinca, and Theros don't need any other setting book to function as a setting reminder Spelljammer is a setting IN SPACE not in Forgotten Realms or elsewhere...
And finally I don't have time for a second job troubleshooting and creating an basic outline for a setting... other settings aren't Spelljammer setting which I paid money for.
Okay; let me just undermine some "arguments" I've started to see crop up here and elsewhere:
1) "You're SUPPOSED to use this book to get between other settings! Duh! Stupid!"
No: it is called "Adventures IN space" and not "Adventures that happen to use space as an interstate highway". The thrill of exploration lies in the finding; and there's not that much to find in here. That's a problem in a game about adventures.
2) "These books are fine! You just have to go to DriveThruRPG and buy -x book- to make them play correctly! That means it's totally fine!"
No; I should NOT have to purchase third-party "DLC" to make the book I already paid for playable! The lengths people will go to to protect the honor of a company for free never cease to amaze me...
It should NOT fall to your poor DM to have to retrofit and fix half the content in a book to make it playable. At that point: just make your own homebrew setting and hang the official books all together. This was one of the major problems of Hoard of the Dragon Queen.

Lets discuss what you liked and didn't like about the new Spelljammer: Adventures in Space box set
Salutations,
I’m glad I’m seeing the comments I am, as it is in line with a lot of things I think regarding this setting.
To be brief, I have 3 gripes, which arise from my having played the original version.
1. Any chair can be made into a spelljammer helm by a spell caster. Essentially, anyone can get a helm and mount it to pretty much anything, and there is only 1 type of helm with no tonnage limit (or did I miss that part?), Where before there were 5, each with different tonnage ratings. Aside from this, the Arcane transformed to the Mercane and now, as they no longer have the monopoly on helms, they can pretty much be ignored. I mean, why pay their prices when I can get another wizard, from pretty much anywhere, who has this spell to make any chair into a helm? Sure, its a good campaign idea as to where the wizard obtained the spell, but that is another story.
2. Magic items. There are published, close to a hundred Spelljammer specific magic items, most are incredibly useful. I feel this aspect was “phoned in”, at best.
3. Ship to ship combat and movement. I’ve heard arguments on both sides, liking the new simplicity, and missing the old complexity. Just a thought, but it is a form of aerial combat in 3 dimensions. By its nature its going to be a bit complicated. There is no mention of maneuver class of creatures or ships. ( or did I miss that as well?). Example, a ship with maneuver class A vs one with Class C. A can out maneuver the other all day long, staying out of gun sights, while lining up shots. There is no system for this in this work. I keep getting the reference for Salmarsh ship to ship combat….ok….cool. Though, it is for 2D combat on a single plane, not 3D combat on 2 planes….(plane meaning level, not other dimensional planes.)
Overall, as an introduction to a “new” setting, I found it, to be polite, severely lacking, and weak on content in regards to the hype. The only positive note; some good graphics and a couple of ideas for some new parts to my homebrew world.
If I would have skimmed this in the store prior to purchase, I would have simply stuck to the original version and given this one a pass.
See you around the ‘verse. Happy hunting.

It has nice art and some usable races but other then that I consider it the worst setting book WoTC has ever released.
In addition to lacking in rules for things like ship combat, system generation, and other things it also lacks factions and history. It only references a single locations.
I can't even qualify this as a setting. Factions and history are the base minimum to be a setting.
People praise the monster manual, but the balance is all over the place. The cosmic horror for instance isn't going to touch a party at the level where it's CR is supposed to be reasonable. It averages 33 damage on its ability with recharge. They look nice and are nice ideas but they don't all seem usable. A high level fighter could probably solo kill a cosmic horror.
I hadn't read the adventure , because I don't plan to run it and I don't read adventures I don't be running.
I'll just use my own spelljammer conversion instead. There are countless far better free community conversions also.
Also for the physical books the box set model is terrible for players. Only one of the three books is useful if you aren't DMing but they slapped it with DM content and a high price tag.
The whole set is lazy, half-finished, and predatory and it damages my respect for WoTC.

Oh I'm more than sure THAT part is quite on purpose: why only sell the source-book to the DM in a group when you could sell this whole box (which amounts to less overall page count), at a higher price, to everyone at the table instead?

Well...I've had a chance to read it all, then put it to the test at my table. I am one of those fools who tends to pre-order everything to support the company and to get the material first so I can absorb it and get it into my process of adapting it to my campaigns or stories. I'm not going to waste your time trying to wax elegant and convince you of my opinion.
I won't ever pre-order material for D&D again given the quality of this release. (really the last two or three releases) Or the hardcopies either as I tend to do both. The trend of quality releases continues to decline and I am going with a homebrew e-book that is available from a reputable Youtube GM who loves this game and provides a lot of add on value for it, but also feels this was a low quality release.
His rules are better. Far better. And he created them over a weekend. Check out Guy's stuff on if you are in the same Spelljammer as me.
D&D team, you are on the wrong track. Voice of the customer. Do better please.

Agreed. I love the content, but there's not a lot of it. Three 64 page books and a DM screen are not worth $70, or even in my opinion, $50 when at a discount. I love what's in the books, but there's not actually that much in them.

I agree with many here. The product, though with a few highlights, isn’t worth the money paid for it. Lacking in many arenas. If you are on the fence about purchasing, my advice? Look for homebrew offerings floating around for spelljammer or ship to ship. I know Traveller has ship to ship combat rules you can use and/or adapt. It’s unfortunate that the 5e writers continue to put out content with little thought to the DMs and hope they are listening to the ever growing tide of voices raising these concerns.
And as a player it means every campaign you walk into will have different rules for every GM. How is fair to the player base? They generally know the rule for swinging a sword and casting a spell, shouldn't they also be informed as to how to fly and fight their ship?
