I have a party running through Descent into Avernus and one of my players (Clockwork Soul Sorcerer Warforged) has gotten possessed by Gargauth (sp?). During the campaign he has been having these long talks with him and has even let the devil "take the wheel" a few times. Things have to come to a head soon as the campaign is wrapping up and Gargauth wants to be free. Any cool ideas? I was thinking of having them do a ritual to expel him and fight a weaker version of the Archdevil but I am open to suggestions.
It seems pretty clear from the description of the Shield of the Hidden Lord that it would be pretty hard to have the group expel him with only a 1% chance of Dispel Evil and Good succeeding, unless you relish potentially sitting around forever while waiting for the group to cast the spell 237 times. But it sounds like he's already escaped the shield and possessed your player? In that case you might consider some archdevil (for whom that spell automatically succeeds) show up to cast the spell on the player because the archdevil wants Gargauth as a minion. That gives you the opportunity to make a devilish pact between the archdevil and one or more players (to 'help' them and save their friend); a nice little conundrum, unless none of the other players care about saving him.
