So my son, 12, has mentioned numerous times that he is interested in playing. I have no clue about the game at all and how to go about getting him involved or playing. I did purchase the Stormwreck Isle Starter Set for him for Christmas but am at a loss at this point on what else to do to understand it and not throw him in cold. I am more then willing to play with him to help learn but am looking for y’all’s help.
Are there any videos you suggest watching?
Stuff I should read?
Places to get started playing(we are near Raleigh, NC or can play online I guess)
Watch YouTube live play shows such as Critical Role, but understand that as adult professional voice actors, they are playing with a theatrical standard that most groups wouldn't bother to attempt. Their content can have some light adult humor, so just be mindful if you choose to watch it together. I'd recommend watching the first few episodes of Campaign 2, The Mighty Nine.
For first time players, your best bet is to talk to your local game shops and ask about joining the local Adventurer's League, which is typically a drop in and play style tabletop experience with a mixture of experienced and new players.
For your son, I recommend a series by the creators of Critical Role called: Handbooker Helper. It's a great series that walks through alot of the mechanics. You can find it on Youtube.
In addition, Wizards of the Coast has on their Youtube a playlist called "Learning Dungeons and Dragons."
During 4th edition, a couple of books came out called "Dungeons and Dragons for Dummies" and "Dungeon Masters for Dummies." These are great resources for the feel of the game. The mechanics (rules) are different, but the spirit is the same.
Finally, ask your son if his friends are interested in playing. This game is really about playing with your friends and family, and more is always better.
Hope this helps, please feel free to message me directly if you have additional questions.
