This is my first time posting to the forum, so if my question belongs in another topic or someone has covered this, I apologize ahead of time. Anyway, I have been super into the "This is your life" generator in Xanathar's Guide. However, I was wondering if anyone has come across a starting region generator (for Faerun) for PCs. It could even be just for the Sword Coast. I looked on the web but couldn't find anything. Maybe people figure FR is too large for a random Table? If not, what would be a good way to randomly generate starting locations? How could you take account of "races" and "subraces?" My simple, but not so great, solution was to use 2d6 to represent vertical and horizontal dimensions on the Sword Coast map. But, what happens for dwarf characters etc?
I had the same issue. I couldn't find any such generators either. However, wiki fandom lists all the d&d settlements from towns to metropolises. I just rolled on there as if it were a table. Also, if you're looking to adjust it to your race, some cities on wiki fandom have percentage ratios of the inhabitants' races.
would this be for NPCs or PCs? i could just see it as for NPCs but why would you - the DM (I assume) - want it for PCs? the players should be picking their character's origins not you. T other part of this is that for most NPcs where they started is a fairly useless point unless your going to base key points of character off it. Red Wizards of Thay are found throughout Faerun even if they all started in Thay; because of the cross continent trade routes anyone CAN be from anywhere - especially as an adventurer - and the higher their level the more likely it is that they have travelled (extensively). On the other hand beginng and lower level characters should typically be from the area your adventure would be occuring in - or from fairly nearby regions.
