Epic D&D win: My players have trapped themselves in an Otherworld full of faeries, elementals, and spirits. They did this on purpose because in this place they are safe from scrying spells cast by the wizard-king whose prisoner they rescued. They began by taking a sojourn ontop of a Zaratan which was also a mountain and also an earthquake in potentia. Undeterred by gangs of shadar-kai and eladrin, they made their way to the place where one character's home would have been, but most of the mundane world isn't reflected in this mirror. Looking for a way to make this situation something more than a dead end, I gave them the opportunity to scout the tower of their wizard enemy. (I also included interactions with their reflections--reflections which are also the physical incarnations of their mortalities, but that's a bit of my endgame...)
They entered the tower from the top, and searched floor by floor, finding a Leomund's Secret Chest which contained platinum coins and a magical belt. We had to pause in the middle because I hadn't really planned any encounters, because it wasn't ever a sure bet that they'd take this path... But this last session, they found the wizard's golem foundry, in which was a partially assembled iron golem. And that's when the madness began. My thought had been to offer information the characters could have used later, but one of them is a runeknight, and one of them is haunted, and the haunted one is a sorcerer with passwall.
In a moment of synchronicity that bordered on predestination, they crafted a plan to put the ghost which haunts the sorcerer into the golem using a runic inscription hidden inside its chest. Passwall gave them the ability to do so. Inspiration was used to ensure the skill checks were up to the task. And the pièce de résistance was that in a previous session, the sorcerer stole a mystery spell from her reflection. At that time I decided it would be animate objects because it would create the most chaos when used without knowledge. Now, my evil wizard's iron golem has a ghost sympathetic to the players inside it and the ghost is equipped with animate objects and intellect fortress. Prepare for beautiful chaos!
So when Frankenstein brings his creation to life, it will eventually destroy him. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. The players just need to find a way to be there at the moment of the awakening to take the fight to the wizard. Sounds like it's gonna be a heck of a showdown.
