Here is the thing. If you don't want to see it, you do not have to look. But people are still riled up about this. And there still is no reason to calm down. I do not even like VTT stuff and I think what they are trying to do is insane. Why is it so hard to understand that the people, the ones who actually make this company money by buying their books and whatever else they put out, do not want something updated or "fixed" when it was not broken in the first place? Why can a company not actually LISTEN to their consumers? So no I am not going to calm down and neither should the community. WoTC needs US, we do not need them.
Isn't it interesting that there was no push to update the OGL from the community based on fear of hateful 3rd party content, but once WotC used that as a justification to ditch their existing licenses people keep parroting it as some kind of emergency?
They're also painting everyone opposed to revoking 1.0a as some sort of bigot, because they oppose the anti-hate provisions.
I don't oppose those provisions, I oppose WotC being the ones to administer them what with them being unworthy of trust.
Administer with no recourse for the 3rd party content creator (as written, doubt it would stand up in court).
And the only example of someone doing it (nuTSR) is not even using the 1.0 OGL, they are just infringing on a trademark. So no examples from the last 23 years to justify invalidating the OGL for 3.0 with no long term replacement because of something that has not even happened in 23 years.
On the upside I did figure out where the Ignore option is.
In a past life I was a community manager for GalaNet
Then you should know better than most what it is I'm talking about, and what happens to online communities that allow the kind of venom we're seeing right now to go unchecked
Acting like somehow you are the be all end all of how people should be allowed to express their frustration is a big ask though dude; who died and made you God?
Like I get it, you're tired of seeing stuff about the OGL, but like... People deserve to get to speak. Just because they want to talk about this right now doesn't make them bad or anything, and you don't have to linger on the forums while this is a hot button issue and subject yourself to it either if you're tired of hearing about it?
Sadly, this is the exact issue that bothers me about this whole mess.
It is splintering the community.
I have been a member longer than you, does that make my opinion more valuable than yours? You using this one point of entry in to the community as the measure of who is in the community only sews more division.
This major blunder on the part of WOTC has done far more damage than any third party product. A month ago, you and I were fellow travelers through this shared experience, whether we knew it or not. Now? Well, now you are drawing a line in the sand that may keep me out because I avoid message boards like the plague.
I get that it is annoying to hear so many people complaining, and yeah, the brand new accounts are sus(piciousd), yet all of our opinions are valid. I know Wizards took a hit using the word fear in their initial release, but if we are being honest, fear was driving a lot of this, and still is. People omnline are afraid for their livlihood. Wizards came at the community hard and it was scary for people who have grown to rely on the ecosystem that we have created. The corporation has no insight in to ecosystems and failed to see what would happen if you threatened people.
This is a natural reaction to the threat. Wizards came in like a wrecking ball and now needs to help heal the community. You and I have a part to play in that too. If we can develop com,mon ground again, and truly hear each other, then maybe we can get past this as a community. If we start drawing lines in the sand, we are going to quickly find ourselves all alone.
I’ve played D&D for 40 years, I’ll say what I dang well please! I’ll say it with the pathfinder beginner box because I know how corporations speak. I’ll say it with my cancelled subscription because I know how corporations speak. I know exactly the way to speak because I grew up before VTTs, before websites, before BBS’s.. I know how corporations speak. Ttoday and yesterday.
No, this entire rewrite of the OGL is a shame and the fact that they are trying to negotiate with users rather than lawyers reinforces the fact that they are trying to trick their users.
They are STILL reserving rights to be able to terminate the license on anyone at any time. They just need to proffer a reason they *think* it's hate and you cannot fight that or go to court over it. In other words. They can at any time revoke a license on their SOLE DISCRETION. (it's written in the 1.2 text no less!!!)
OGL 1.0a or ORC License. Nothing less. If they try to do anything else, I hope a class action lawsuit occurs. I will most certainly join it.

Honestly I think the turmoil is healthy, keep it boiling for a bit. Good thing to get it all out and maybe some good will come of it (and if not I'll see you all @ Piazo).

As much as the media hyped and sensationalized the initial news break I can imagine so. Bandwagoners
May the Dice be ever in your favor!!
